It’s said that hindsight is 20/20 which means the understanding of an event or situation after it’s happened. We want to help and provide you with information that will serve as a guide through which you can make informed decisions and ensure you are in charge of your sexual in ‘the year of hindsight,’ 2020.
In a previous article, we discussed the reality of abortion stigma and the emotional dangers inherent in the negative connotations that lead to women having unsafe abortions. Please read the full article here so that you can be a part of the change that needs to take place in South Africa.
Safe abortion is your legal right
We launched our Blue Ribbon campaign to empower women by providing them with access to accurate information and resources about safe abortions so that they are able to make informed decisions about what to do with their bodies.
The distortion, negative undertones and social stigma attached to the word ‘abortion’ imply that abortion is ‘unclean’, leading women to seek ‘backstreet’ abortions, which are illegal, unsafe and often ineffective, and potentially fatal.
Practice safe sex
Safe sex begins with having a complete understanding of contraception. Did you know there are different types of female contraceptives? They are divided into the following categories: long-acting, short-acting, barrier methods and emergency contraception.
Long-acting: Implant; Copper IUD
Short-acting: The combined Pill (commonly known as the Pill); Progestogen-only pill (POP); injection; patch
Emergency contraception: Morning-after pill
Barrier methods: Male and female condoms
It’s important to choose the contraceptive method that suits your needs. We provide contraception counselling as part of our Well Women’s sexual health services.
If you have unsafe sex, you increase the chances of contracting STIs and/or having an unintended pregnancy. If you do happen to fall pregnant and want to terminate, we offer safe abortion services (medicine or surgical procedure) that are administered/performed by medical professionals in a safe, sanitary facility.
Please read our article which explains all of the different types of female contraception available in South Africa.
Get tested for STIs
Did you know that there are currently 27 known sexually transmitted infections? They can be transmitted through the exchange of bodily fluids (saliva, blood, semen) or skin-to-skin contact. Common STIs include
- Hepatitis B
- Herpes simplex virus
- Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV)
- Human papillomavirus (HPV)
