International Safe Abortion Day takes place annually on 28 September. It’s an international campaign to provide awareness that women have a human right to safe abortion.
There is a global stigma attached to the word ‘abortion’. It seems to be a social taboo that exists but shouldn’t be spoken about and unfortunately this leads to women seeking ‘backstreet’ abortions, which are illegal, unsafe and often ineffective.
The dangers of unsafe abortions
Immediate complications from unsafe abortions may include: severe bleeding, uterine perforation, tearing of the cervix, severe damage to the genitals and abdomen, internal infection of the abdomen and blood poisoning.
Medium term complications may range from reproductive tract infections and pelvic inflammatory disease to chronic pain.
Late complications may include a slightly increased risk of infertility and ectopic pregnancy, miscarriage or premature delivery in subsequent pregnancies.
At Marie Stopes, we are committed to breaking through the barriers of social stigma associated with abortion and emphasise that autonomy for women to make informed decisions about their sexual and reproductive health, including safe abortion, are human rights.
We want all women in South Africa to know that abortion is legal and women under the age of 18, don’t require parental consent to have the procedure. According to South African law, The Choice on Termination of Pregnancy Act, 1996 protects the right of women of any age to access abortion legally in South Africa, at a designated facility by a trained provider up to 20 weeks of pregnancy.
Marie Stopes South Africa offers two types of safe abortion procedures:
- The Marie Stopes Medical Process (often called the abortion pill)
- The Marie Stopes Procedure (a minor same-day surgical procedure)
Doctors and nurses will determine which procedure is right for you depending on:
- Gestation (stage of your pregnancy)
- Your general health and medical conditions
- Your preference
Our safe abortion services include:
- A free contraceptive method and STI screening
- The opportunity to talk to a nurse about
- Optional HIV testing
An expert nurse or doctor will provide pre-care information on the day of your appointment and make time to answer any questions you may have. Marie Stopes is here for you, always.
Marie Stopes currently has 17 centres across South Africa that offer safe abortion procedures and support. We know that an unplanned pregnancy can be stressful and that having an abortion raises a lot of questions. To make an appointment for a safe abortion book online or call us on 0800 11 77 85.
