Experiencing problems in the bedroom? There are physical and psychological factors that can contribute to a low sex-drive such as medical conditions, low self-esteem, anxiety, and depression. Marie Stopes South Africa’s Women’s Wellness services are here to help you.
Here are nine tips to help you enjoy a healthy sex life
- Keep work out of the bedroom
The majority of us struggle with stress on a daily basis but bringing it home can put a damper on your libido. Make an effort to keep stress out of the bedroom. Focus solely on pleasing your partner.
- Exercise regularly
Exercise keeps you physically and mentally fit. Physical activity releases endorphins and a neurotransmitter called dopamine; both work together to trigger a ‘good’ feeling in the body.
- Eat healthily
Diet can play a massive role on whether or not you have a healthy sex life. High fat, high carbohydrate foods such fast-food can cause a drop in energy levels, contribute to weight gain which can lower self confidence.Make sure that you eat more foods that can benefit your libido e.g. fresh fruits, vegetables, wholegrains, protein, foods rich in Omega-3 such as fish, and good-quality red meat. You’ll be happy to know that red wine and dark chocolate (in moderation) can boost your libido.
- Speak to your doctor
If you are experiencing sexual frustration due to a low libido, it’s important to speak to your doctor. There could be an underlying problem that is contributing to your low sex drive.
- Communicate with each other
Communication in a relationship is vital, even in the bedroom. Don’t be afraid to ask your partner what they enjoy. The willingness to talk to your partner about their desires will bring you closer together.
- Stop (or don’t) smoke and moderate alcohol intake
Like oil and water, alcohol and your sex drive don’t mix; it can negatively affect your libido. As the amount of alcohol in the bloodstream increases, there is a decrease in the brain’s ability to sense sexual stimulation.Smoking contributes to a blood circulation disorder called peripheral vascular disease which causes the narrowing of blood vessels, reducing the amount of blood flow to vaginal tissue. Furthermore, studies have shown that women who smoke have a higher risk of going into menopause earlier than women who don’t smoke.
- Do Kegel exercises
Kegel exercise strengthen your pelvic floor which improves blood flow circulation to your vagina increasing the ability to experience sexual pleasure.
- Get tested
We’re not only talking about getting tested for STIs, which can easily be contracted from not practicing safe sex. There is a possibility that an underlying medical problem is contributing to a low sex drive e.g. pain during sex can indicate gynaecological problems.
- Rekindle the fire
There is nothing wrong with being spontaneous; routine can become monotonous and kill the spark. Go on date nights, or perhaps take a trip on the spur-of-the-movement. Keeping your relationship exciting will help rekindle your sex life.
