Pregnancy can be an emotional rollercoaster and more often than not women and their partners may worry about the sex positions they can try that are both comfortable and in no way, harmful to the baby. Let’s lay waste to the myths now. Sex, even whilst pregnant, is safe. The various movements during intercourse won’t harm the baby as it is protected by your abdomen and the amniotic sac’s fluid.
Towards the final days of your pregnancy however, doctors may advise against sex under the belief that hormones in semen called prostaglandins can stimulate contractions.
If you’re having a normal pregnancy, having sex is a normal thing to do. Here are a few safe sex positions you can try to ensure you’re comfortable.
Doggy style (Rear Entry Position)
The rear entry position has a number of variations as you can be on your hands and knees or in a kneeling position. The doggy style position, while standing, allows for a much shallower penetration than most other positions, which may be more comfortable for you. Allay your partners fears with this position as your pregnancy progresses.
As your belly grows bigger, you may find yourself preferring being on top as this position is ideal for you to control the speed and depth of penetration. The cowgirl position is ideal for manual clitoral stimulation to help you reach that much-needed orgasm. Many couples prefer this position during the third trimester.
You and your partner can lay down on your sides with your partner pressed against your back, entering you from behind. Spooning is considered the best position when you’re in the third trimester as deep penetration is difficult to achieve, which is good for your cervix if it’s sensitive.
With your legs spread, stand facing the wall and your hands against it either above your head or at shoulder height, your partner stands behind you for penetration. Having support from the wall allows you to mix it up a little while getting many of the same benefits as rear-entry.
To get more comfortable during sex, let your partner take a seat on the edge of your bed or chair and facing away, lower yourself onto him. This allows for maximum leverage, and you can test out which angles feel most comfortable.
Whether giving or receiving, having oral sex whilst pregnant is fine. This can be a pleasant alternative to penetrative sex for you and your partner. It’s important to know however, you may have a heightened gag reflex due to morning sickness when giving oral sex to your partner during the first trimester.
Similar to spooning, lay down on your side but this time, face your partner and have him move his leg over yours and enter you from an angle. This position allows for extra intimacy during pregnancy as you and your partner can look in each other’s eyes and connect. It is also beneficial as you can rest on your sides without putting the pressure on the stomach.
