Unwanted Pregnancy

Unwanted Pregnancy

If you are facing an unwanted pregnancy, Marie Stopes centres around South Africa can help you.

We offer information and counselling on three options, namely continuing with the pregnancy and keeping the baby; adoption, and termination of pregnancy.

If you choose termination of pregnancy, we offer safe, private and legal termination of pregnancy at our centres, and this can be performed up until 20 weeks into the pregnancy.

Because abortion is legal in South Africa, it is available to any woman in any situation, as a means of coping with an unwanted pregnancy. If you are under the age of 18, we will advise you to speak with your parents about your pregnancy. However, this is up to you.

We will also encourage you to discuss the pregnancy with your partner – this is also at your own discretion. We will never force you to divulge your pregnancy to anyone, and ultimately, the way you choose to deal with the pregnancy is your decision.

Termination of pregnancy: Up until 20 weeks

While termination of pregnancy is legal in South Africa, it is illegal to perform an abortion after 20 weeks, unless the life or health of the mother is in danger, or the foetus is likely to be born with severe developmental defects. This can only be done in hospital by a team of specialised doctors.

Marie Stopes offers two kinds of abortions, depending on the stage of the pregnancy. A medical abortion is available to women who are less than 9 weeks pregnant (this is medicine-induced abortion), while surgical abortion can be performed on women who are between 6 and 20 weeks pregnant.

We offer information and counselling before and after the procedure, and our staff members are always on hand to answer any queries you may have even after you left the clinic.

Trained staff help you to cope with unwanted pregnancy

At Marie Stopes, our doctors and nurses are trained to terminate unwanted pregnancy, which means that the procedure is carried out correctly and with minimal discomfort to clients. Moreover, when a termination of pregnancy is performed correctly, it will not affect your future chances of falling pregnant. It will also not endanger your health, unlike many illegal, unsafe abortions, which can result in infections, infertility, or in extreme cases, death.

At Marie Stopes, you’re assured of receiving the highest quality clinical care, and you’ll have the peace of mind of knowing that our procedures are completely safe and legal, and that sedation options are available if required.
