Marie Stopes Ligation is the brand name for the method of female voluntary surgical contraception, using the “laparoscopic technique”. The operation can be successfully and safely performed under conscious sedation, which makes it a painfree procedure.

The operation can be successfully and safely performed under local anaesthetic, which makes it much more affordable, while at the same time avoiding the risks associated with general anaesthetic.  The whole process including counseling and recovery only takes 2 to 3 hours, which means a woman can be back at work the next day if required. The procedure itself, normally takes less than 12 minutes.

All women of reproductive age who do not want to have any more children, may qualify for the operation, but they have to understand that it is an irreversible, permanent method of contraception.
