MALE CIRCUMCISION
What is Circumcision?
A Circumcision is an operation to remove the foreskin, the sleeve of skin that surrounds the head of you' your penis. The procedure usually takes less than 30 minutes which means that you can have the procedure done and go home on the same day.
Your circumcision can be done under local anesthetic where the area is numbed. This means you will be aware of what is happening without feeling the pain.
What are the benefits of circumcision?
There is evidence that circumcision had health benefits, including a decrease risk of urinary tract infection, a reduced risk of sexually transmitted infections in men, protecting against penile cancer and reduced risk of cervical cancer in female sex partners. It also makes it easier to keep the penis clean.
Some types of sexually transmitted infections (STI's) are more common in uncircumcised men than in men who have been circumcised. Men, who are not circumcised, may be less likely to notice the symptoms of STI's that cause warts or ulcers on the genitals, such as herpes or syphilis.
Studies in Africa showed that a HIV infection reduction rate of 53% was noted in men who were circumcised against men who were not. This supports the view that adult male circumcision helps protect against HIV infection.
The most reliable way to prevent the spread of STI's and HIV still remains the practice of safe sex. Always use a condom and if you have a new partner you should both get checked for any STI's before having sexual intercourse.
