CONTRACEPTIVES
Emergency Contraception ( The Morning After Pill ):
Emergency contraceptive pills ( ECP )can be taken within 72 hours of the unprotected sex, failed contraceptives, rape, the condom broke.
ECP doesn't cause an abortion, doesn't cause birth effects if pregnancy occurs and is not dangerous to a woman's health.
Take 2 pills immediately and 2 pills 12 hours later. If vomiting occurs within 2 hrs of taking it, the dose must be repeated.
ECP can fail, therefore condoms must be used immediately till the next menstruation, which might be delayed.
It is advisable to discuss future contraception with your health care provider, since ECP can't be used as a method of contraception.
If it is more than 72 hours but less than 120 hours after the unprotected sex, an Intra Uterine Contraceptive Device can be inserted. Discuss this with your healthcare provider.
Male Condoms:
Use a new condom for each act of sex.
Before any physical contact, place the condom on the tip of the erect penis with the rolled side out.
Unroll the condom all the way to the base of the erect penis. Only use water based lubricants on the condoms.
Immediately after ejaculation, hold the rim of the condom in place and withdraw the penis while it is still erect.
Dispose of the used condom safely.
