CIRCUMCISION

THE MARIE STOPES CIRCUMCISION (MSC):

WHAT IS A CIRCUMCISION?

A circumcision is a surgical procedure where the foreskin (the skin that covers the tip of the penis) is removed.

HOW LONG DOES A CIRCUMCISION TAKE?

It takes approximately 30 minutes and is a same day procedure

ADVANTAGES:

·         Reduces risk of urinary tract infections.

·         Reduces risk in contracting sexually transmitted infections.

·         Reduces risk of cancer of the penis.

·         Reduces risk of cervical cancer in the partners of circumcised males.

·         Research in Africa has proved a reduced rate of over 50% of HIV infection in circumcised men in comparison with uncircumcised men.

Please note: Circumcision does not prevent the spread of HIV. Men and their partners should continue to use condoms consistently and properly to protect against STI’S including HIV.

AREAS OF CONCERN:

The usual minor risks apply that are associated with minor surgery such as:

  1. Bruising
  2. Mild infection
  3. Ongoing pain and discomfort

HOW IS CIRCUMCISION DONE?

A MSC is a minor surgical procedure.

·         There are certain risks as well as benefits in undergoing a MSC. Counselling should reassure a man that complications are rare but it is important to know what these could be.

·         The entire visit is handled on an outpatient basis and takes approximately 30 minutes.

·         The procedure is done under local anesthetic.

·         The head of the penis is anesthetized.

·         The foreskin is then removed using a scalpel (a surgical blade).

·         The wound is sutured with soluble stitches (stitches that do not require removal).

·         The wound is dressed.

·         The client can leave when he feels ready- it is not necessary for him to stay any length of time.

WHAT AFTERCARE IS NEEDED AFTER A MSC?

·         After the procedure one should not exert themselves. Preferably they should take 1-2 days leave. This will help the wound to heal.

·         Bathing is permitted as long as the dressing does not get wet.

·         The dressing may be replaced after 1-2 days. The wound can take 4-6 weeks to heal.

·         There is to be no sexual intercourse or masturbation for 4-6 weeks.

·         Pain killers may be used in the event of discomfort.

Please note: Condoms are to be used as soon as sexual activity resumes until the
    wound is completely healed.
