WHAT IS A FULL GYNAE?
A Full Gynae is a comprehensive woman’s health check-up performed by a professional nurse. It consists of:
PROCEDURAL INFORMATON:
1. The procedure takes approximately 20-30 minutes.
2. The papsmear is done by taking a sample of cells from the cervix (mouth of the womb) which is then sent to a laboratory for analysis. This test will help detect any vaginal infections including pre-cancer and cancer lesions. The procedure can be slightly uncomfortable but it can be a lifesaving test and takes only 10 minutes. This test cannot detect diseases like HIV, Syphilis, Gonorrhea or Chlamydia.
3. A bimanual examination is done to detect any abnormalities of the uterus (womb) or STI’S.
4. The professional nurse will do the breasts examination and also teach the woman how to examine her breasts to identify any abnormalities. This most important procedure is painless and takes approximately 10 minutes
5. The woman is required to produce a urine sample and a pregnancy test will be done.
6. Sonar will be done to detect any abnormalities or an existing pregnancy.
ADVANTAGES:
· The early detection of irregularities or disease can facilitate early medical intervention and management thus preventing more serious consequences.
· It is quick and can be done on a walk in basis.
HOW OFTEN SHOULD A WOMAN HAVE A FULL GYNAE EXAMINATION?
It is advisable to have an examination once a year.
