VOLUNTARY COUNSELLING AND TESTING:

WHAT IS VOLUNTARY COUNSELLING AND TESTING (VCT)?

Voluntary HIV counseling and testing is an activity which gives the client an opportunity to confidentially discuss their HIV risks and consent to be tested to determine their HIV status.

WHY SHOULD A PERSON UNDERGO VCT?

  • To be counseled regarding your potential status.
  • To determine ones status.
  • To be counseled on managing ones status.

PROCEDURAL INFORMATION:

  • Pretest counseling is undertaken prior to the actual test for the purpose of enabling individuals to take control of their lives by:

Developing the ability to make realistic decisions.

Changing behavior to produce desirable consequences

Providing information about HIV and AIDS.

  • Consent is given for the test.
  • A rapid test is performed in the form of a fingerprick test.
  • Post - test counseling is given:

To provide the results of the test.

To offer support

To discuss management of the individuals status.

ADVANTAGES:

  • VCT can help prevent the spread of HIV.
  • VCT enables individuals to take control of their lives through behavior/lifestyle change.
  • Treatment, care and support can be accessed if the individual is HIV+.

AREAS OF CONCERN:

  • Marie Stopes is a VCT facilitator only and refers HIV+ individuals to other health institutions/professionals for management.
  • An inconclusive result will necessitate a further laboratory test.

WHO SHOULD UNDERGO VCT:

Any sexually active person who is unaware of their HIV status.

Any person who has participated in risky sexual behavior.
